Jimmy's report from Newsarama 5/26/09:

"SIGNING AT TATE’S COMICS: I am jealous of all you people that live near this store. This is hands down one of the greatest comic stores I have been to and I have been to many. The selection is unbeatable and I was able to get around 20 different art books I have been looking all over for and some out of print trades. That and some huge vinyl toys I never knew I needed before. Here is a big thanks to Tate, Amanda and the entire staff of the store for making Amanda and I feel like old friends. If you go to the store for the first time, tell them I sent you… I am sure Tate will take good care of you."

Dark Water (aka Honogurai mizu no soko kara)
Synopsis: Hideo Nakata, the filmmaker who ignited the current Japanese horror boom with 1998’s Ring, returns with a disturbing chiller touching on fears of childhood abandonment and vulnerability. An emotionally fragile single mother (Hitomi Kuroki) and her six-year-old daughter (Rio Kanno) move into a seedy apartment building, where ghostly footsteps, a mysterious moldering damp patch on the ceiling and empty hallways convey an atmosphere of uncanny dread. “A ghost story superior in ambition, intellect and maturity ...compulsively creepy” — The Observer. In the last decade, Pete has become one of the most talented, well known artists and metal sculptors in South Florida and a vital member of the growing local art scene.

In October 2005, Peter was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor and has since undergone surgery, daily radiation and chemotherapy. As he fights this battle, he is no longer able to create his visionary sculptures along with modern furniture and incredible commissioned works.

The local art and entertainment community is joining forces to help Pete through this difficult time by holding a fundraising event which will include a silent art auction, featuring fine works by local and other national artists, from 4:00 PM until midnight, entertainment will be provided by some of the hottest bands in South Florida.

All of the artwork and entertainment is being donated by the artists and performers, with the proceeds to benefit Peter's living and medical expenses until he overcomes this disease and re-claims his place in the art community. Find it in your heart to take a stand, join this effort and For the Love of Pete, let him know he is not alone in his struggle.

In-Store Signing with Rich Koslowski
Saturday, February 18th, 2006 • 2:30-4pm

Rich Koslowski has worked in the animation and comic book field since 1990. He got his start at Archie Comics as an Inker and has since evolved into a freakin' genius!  "It's true," Koslowski was quoted to say, "I'm an incredibly intelligent and talented human being. Strong, too. "His proudest accomplishments thus far in his short but illustrious career include the three Eisner nominations he received for his work on his self-published parody title THE 3 GEEKS (which later became GEEKSVILLE), his first graphic novel with Top Shelf Productions, THREE FINGERS, which earned him an Ignatz Award and throngs of beautiful groupies (mostly female), and his latest graphic novel (also published by Top Shelf) entitled THE KING! He's currently working on an illustrated novella tentatively entitled THE LIST and taking a newly found interest in the personal grooming of his body hair (which is, in fact, unusual since he's not all that hairy). Rich lives in Wisconsin with his wife Sandy (who helps on all his projects) and their lovely little girl, Stella. "We hate the weather here, sure...it absolutely sucks," said Koslowski, "but, y'know, we'd feel terribly guilty moving away what with both sets of grandparents still...y'know...alive. We're just kind of...y'know...uh...waiting."

Friday, February 27th, 8:00pm at Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale’s MARK K. WHEELER GALLERY

Toys as art? That's right! You probably only think of toys and action figures as a mass marketed product, but there is a entire subculture of artisans involved with bringing light to the unknown market of "Designer Toys". Based on original concepts, not the prospect of sales, these pieces of art are showcased for the first time in their purest form. These characters were crafted with art in mind, not commerce. You get to see the seasoned vets as well as the up and coming Toy Artists! FREE ADMISSION.
